Eco Schools

ecoschThe Tameside Eco-Schools project began in 1997 when six primary schools launched the pilot phase of the project. In each year since, further cohorts have joined the project. Over half of Tameside primary, secondary and special schools are actually involved. Eco-Schools activities have received a lot of publicity locally and teachers and pupils from Tameside Eco-Schools have contributed to conferences in other authorities. The project has had a significant impact on participating pupils and teachers. The project offers many opportunities for active citizenship and the engagement of pupils. Teachers are confident that they are making a clear contribution to the citizenship education of their pupils.

Schools are supported in their work through a launch conference in September and termly meetings of Eco Coordinators. In addition, they have access to specialist support from Tameside MBC officers responsible for recycling and waste management, energy efficiency and the Countryside Service.

The Eco-Schools Project is a very important part of the local authority's agenda for tackling environmental issues and climate change, and the project is supported by members of the Council.

Over twenty Schools have been awarded full international Eco-School status and many have achieved bronze and silver awards.
