Dear Head teacher
Cheshire and North Wales (Individual) Junior Chess Championships 2010
I am writing to request your support for the Cheshire and North Wales Junior Chess Championships on Saturday 9th October 2010 at King's School, Wrexham Road, Chester CH4 7QL
The objectives of the event are :-
i) Encourage as many children as possible to enjoy the game of chess.
ii) Introduce children to the experience of a proper chess tournament – some may
enjoy it sufficiently to take it up as an interest.
iii) Invite talented children to play for the County team or attend County trials.
iv) Establish Cheshire and North Wales champions in each age groups for 2 levels
- County level and School/Club level. (Also, there’s a trophy for the best school.)
v) Encourage schools to start a chess club.
Please support this event if you can – I’m sure anyone who attends the competition will enjoy their day (see http://cnwjc.weebly.com/
for the report on the successful events staged in 2008 and 2009.)
Suggested actions are :-
Mention the event in a school newsletter (see below).
Display as many posters around the school as possible (attached)
Print off a few entry forms and hand out to anyone who inquires about the tournament.
Would any member of staff be interested in receiving advice on setting up a chess club ? If so, please let us know and we can arrange for a chess coach to speak to them on the day.
If you have any queries on any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Yours sincerely
Judy Brown (Assistant Junior Organiser, Cheshire and North Wales Chess Association)

Suggested text for a School Newsletter:
"The Cheshire and North Wales Junior Chess Championships, for players of all ages and all levels of ability, will take place on Saturday 9th October 2010 at The King’s School, Wrexham Road, Chester CH4 7QL. There'll be prizes for every competitor according to points scored, and a trophy for the best County level player and for the best School level player in every school year.
Talented players will be selected to represent Cheshire and North Wales in inter-county competitions, and complete beginners will receive a tuition period before playing in their own competition.
To enter simply type CNWJC (stands for Cheshire and North Wales Junior Chess) from Google and log onto http://cnwjc.weebly.com/. Print off the entry form and send in before 6th October 2010 (or before 25th September to gain an 'early-bird' discount on the entry fee.) Entry fee only £8 (£7 early-bird)."
NB
Many children play chess on the internet /with friends or relatives and could have the potential to be County or National Standard, but there is no other way of them knowing about this event other than via the school.
It is an individual event with a team trophy as an extra - there is no need for the school to co-ordinate entries.
If your school doesn't have a chess club, there is an opportunity for complete beginners to learn to play and then compete in the beginners competition.
Closing date for entries is Wednesday 6th October ('early-bird' discount for entries by 25th September)
